TLDSB students take part in the Fall Fry Bread and Friends Event

The Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Indigenous Student Success Team (ISST) hosted Fall Fry Bread and Friends Events at every secondary school across the Board throughout the months of November and December.

Similar to last year’s events, students who have self-identified as Indigenous are invited to a full day of learning more about their culture, identity, and history. These students get a chance to meet new people, strengthen existing relationships, celebrate who they are, and see themselves represented inside their school walls. Each attendee also has the opportunity to bring a friend to the event to share the experience and elements of their cultures.

This year’s fall events focused on storytelling, big drum teachings, and building relationships. Students heard from Brian Sarazin from Algonquins of Pikwakanagan and Jared Big Canoe from Chippewa of Georgina Island.

“I love the Fry Bread and Friends Event,” said Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School student, Alex McConnell. “They are really fun and it gives me more chances to learn about my culture. Everyone there is always nice and amazing.”

“I think the event is welcoming,” said I.E. Weldon Secondary School student, Chantel Nicholson. “It is fun that we get to learn about our culture and how to make different things each time.”

The event will also run again at each secondary school across in the spring.
