The Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics Primary Division (Grades 1-3) and Junior Division (Grades 4-6) are based on the reading, writing and mathematics expectations in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8. These assessments provide both individual and system data on students' achievement.

* Test Dates: May 23 to June 6, 2012

6. Is Full-Day Kindergarten offered at Leslie Frost P.S.?

Leslie Frost P.S. does not currently offer the Full-Day Kindergarten program. TLDSB is phasing in this program over the next few years.

When will full-day Kindergarten be in all schools?

The Full-Day Kindergarten program will roll out over five years, with more schools added each year so that by 2015-2016 every elementary school in Ontario will offer full-day, every day kindergarten.

Schools to be added for the 2011-2012 school year in TLDSB are:

* Archie Stouffer Elementary School
* Cardiff Elementary School

Will there be extended day programs at this year's full day kindergarten schools?

There has not been sufficient interest by families to run before and after school programs at the schools starting full-day kindergarten in 2010-2011. This will be reviewed annually.

For more information, download the FACTS document from the Ministry of Education's website.

7. What is a balanced day?

A balanced day is an elementary school schedule consisting of three 100 minute blocks of instructional time, separated by two "nutrition" breaks. These nutrition breaks are approximately 40 minutes in length, allowing 20 minutes for healthy eating, and 20 minutes of outdoor time. Slight variations in timing or order of activities exist across our district. View Leslie Frost's balanced day schedule here.

Research on a balanced school day indicates several positive effects. One such effect is the ability to structure large, uninterrupted blocks of time for teaching and learning. Reported benefits of these blocks of time include improved grades and attendance rates. Teachers have the ability to engage in a wide variety of instructional strategies, and transition times are decreased. Parents and teachers report a positive impact on student learning, teachers report a positive impact on student concentration, and principals report improvement in student behaviour and fewer office referrals.

Implementing a balanced school day can also have a positive effect on the amount of physical activity student's engage in each day. In a balanced day schedule, students have more opportunities to pursue extracurricular and intramural activities. Two outside breaks allows an additional opportunity for teams to practice. Schools also report further benefits, such as increased physical fitness, greater use of the gym, and less sun exposure during the noon hour.

8. What is EcoSchools?

EcoSchools is a school greening program with a very broad scope. It addresses what is taught in the classroom, how we run our school and how we design and use our school grounds. Its central focus is supporting students and staff in caring for and protecting the environment. EcoSchools asks us to examine the decisions we make in our schools, inside and out – from modifying practices in our classrooms, offices, and boiler rooms to designing the school ground as a place for healthy, enriched learning.

It's a big job. Educational Services (curriculum) and the Plant Department (school operations) devote staff time to helping schools move toward more environmentally aware and sound practices.

Lesliel Frost P.S. has two main areas of focus to minimize our environmental footprint – waste minimization and energy conservation.

At Leslie Frost P.S., the EcoSchools program  is spearheaded by an EcoTeam (called our "Green Team") made up of representatives from all areas of school life – from principal and custodian to teachers, students, and parents. Our Green Team provides our school's staff and students with resources and support to achieve results. Over the past few years, several Trillium Lakelands DSB schools have been recognized provincially for their commitment to environmental stewardship through this program.

Visit the Ontario EcoSchools website for more detailed information about the program.

9. What does Leslie Frost P.S. do to prevent outbreaks of head lice in the classroom?

Your child will be checked regularly for head lice while at school. While having head lice is not considered a health hazard, it is a nuisance and uncomfortable. Our school works hard to minimize the incidence of head lice, and we need your help. Head lice checks are run by parent volunteers who receive training by Trillium Lakelands District School Board's Pediculosis Co-ordinator. Trillium Lakelands DSB has a Policy and Procedure regarding the management of pediculosis.

How can I help to prevent outbreaks of head lice?

You can help by volunteering at your child's school, and by conducting your own weekly head checks. For more information, contact the Board's  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
