Feb. 9, 2012 - A new local dental clinic for low-income residents and local youth is now open.
Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, working in partnership with its Community Health Centre, the HKPR District Health Unit and the City's social services department, has built a dental suite at the CHC location in Lindsay (108 Angeline St. S.). The facility primarily serves people with low incomes, including individuals who receive benefits through Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program. In addition, Community Care is participating in the Healthy Smiles Ontario program, a new initiative of the province for youth up to age 17. Eligibility is determined through the health unit, which works with the CHC to focus on oral health prevention and educational activities.
The dental suite represents meeting one of the priority needs identified for the community a few years ago when the agency conducted a public consultation prior to building the CHC. At that time, accessible and affordable oral health service was identified among key gaps and needs, especially for students and low-income families.
